What Is Functional Breathing?

Functional breathing isn't a special technique. It's how you breathe every day, while you sleep, work, exercise, and live. When it's working well, your body handles stress better and recovers faster.

Most people think better breathing means getting more oxygen in. It's actually more about carbon dioxide, and how well your body copes with it. That's what really drives your breathing rate, your stress levels, and how calm your nervous system feels day to day. Get that right, and breathing becomes something you can use whenever you need to settle your body and mind.

This work is built on the Oxygen Advantage® framework, developed by Patrick McKeown. Instead of a long list of unrelated techniques, it uses a small number of targeted exercises built around the core principles of healthy breathing, and how the way you breathe can influence your energy, focus, emotions, and response to stress.

A lot of everyday patterns come back to breathing. Mouth breathing during sleep is a common reason people wake with a dry mouth. Over-breathing can leave you wired and exhausted at the same time. Breathing faster than your body needs keeps your stress response switched on, showing up as brain fog, a short fuse, or that constant feeling of rushing.

Sleep, breathing, and your emotional state all influence each other. Poor sleep affects your breathing. Poor breathing affects how you feel. And when you're stressed or unsettled, sleep gets harder too. Improve one, and the others tend to follow.

I'm a Certified Oxygen Advantage® Level 1 Functional Breathing Instructor, helping people improve the way they breathe every day to support better sleep, steadier energy, greater resilience to stress, and overall wellbeing.

What Happens In A Session

We start with a proper breathing assessment, a few simple tests to get a clear baseline of where you're at.

From there, we'll talk through what's going on for you, walk through the core breathing principles, and start introducing techniques suited to you.

You'll leave with practical exercises to shift how your body breathes by default, not just during the session, and we build on that together in the sessions that follow.
